HISTORY

Istvan Solyom, head coach of Euro School of Boxing, has been involved in boxing since he was a teenager in Hungary. Istvan trained under some renowned coaches, including former European champion Tibor Badari and Imre Szanto, the longest serving national coach of the Hungarian boxing team.

As a competitor Istvan has competed in many highly regarded tournaments, being crowned Junior Hungarian champion, and also winning the International Pupils Championship, where he was also awarded the most technical boxer award.

Since the early days in Hungary, Istvan came to Australia where his love of boxing continued to see him involved in the sport as a coach, where his achievements are equally impressive.

More recently as a coach, Istvan has trained many successful competitors, including Nick Venizelou, three times NSW title holder (twice being awarded best boxer), Eleanor Boden, the first ever female boxer in NSW, who came second at the national titles, and Dexter Dunworth, who at age 52 is the oldest registered boxer in the world, competing mainly in the united states because of his age.

Istvan has also worked with other martial artists, to improve their punching, footwork and general boxing skills. Istvan spent many years working with Mick Spinks and the kickboxers at the old Double Dragon gym in Kingsford. For many years Istvan has been associated with Chan Cheuk Fai of the Jin Wu Koon Academy, teaching boxing classes and helping the kickboxers with their skills. Other martial artists, including MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitors often seek Istvan’s help with improving their stand up skills.

With boxing being recognised as a superb full body workout, top sporting teams have sought after Istvan to coach them in cross training exercises, most notably the NSW Waratahs and the NSW Junior Cricket team.

Another notable event was the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, where Istvan welcomed the Hungarian boxing team, and helped them prepare in his Eastern Suburbs gymnasium. Check out some of the photos.
